Inspired by three Schubert songs, and by the Unfinished Symphony, saxophonist and composer Dick de Graaf transformed parts of these masterworks into groovy jazz tunes. For this project, he was commissioned by Mario Vanzago, artistic director of the Festival Schubert Unvollendet-Vollendet and by the Bird’s Eye Jazzclub in Basel, Switzerland, in October 2002.

Line-up: Dick de Graaf – tenor saxophone; Daniel Pezzotti – cello; Andrea Pozza – piano; Stephan Kurmann – bass; Hans van Oosterhout – drums

Recorded live at the bird’s eye jazz club Basel by Daniel Dettwiler. October 18th and 19th, 2002. Mixed by Daniel Dettwiler and Dick de Graaf.

    Press:

Even though they begin by playing original Schubert, albeit in a careful and sober disguise, the classical shell mutates immediately and the musicians’ own idiom emerges directly. The result is no a trite crossover, but a serious treatment of the essential characteristics of a different genre by connoisseurs of the jazz medium. As a “classical” musician, I am overwhelmed at the precision and inspiration that inform the impromptu creativity of these improvising musicians. And the present CD stunningly confirms this artistry – Mario Venzago, Principal Conductor of the Basel Symphony Orchestra
