  • Compact Disc (CD) + Digital Album

On this CD you hear jazz music that is inspired by five twentieth-century composers. Fragments from Béla Bartók’s Mikrokosmos and his collections of peasant songs are combined with modern jazz harmony. Besides, the musical languages of French composer Olivier Messiaen’s and Dutch composer Peter Schat’s are freely applied by Dick de Graaf in his characteristic and natural way.
Bird Buzz is based on the famous jazz standard Night And Day (Cole Porter). Count Your Blessings, is build upon the chords of Miles Davis’ Tune Up. In A Crow Calling, you hear the sound of a crow from the old cedar in front of his house repeating the initial phrase so realistically that De Graaf felt obliged to dedicate this piece to him.
Titmouse’s recalls a couple of these hungry little birds scratching around in a winter garden. Master Slow Feet imagines the father goose that occasionally forces tram 25 in Dick’s hometown Rotterdam to give way to him and his family crossing the rails.
La Bergerie is dedicated to the beauty of the French Ardennes, where Dick, surrounded by silence and birdsong, got his inspiration for this CD.
In Sparrows, the hectic noises are omnipresent. Why Birds Always Sing was already released on the CD Moving Target (SR02), with Dick playing the soprano saxophone. Yet, the sound of the tenor sax outlines a notably different answer to this intriguing question. In Phenix, the capricious improvisations force the firebird to resurrect on top of an ardent 7/8-meter.

Line-up: Dick de Graaf – tenor and soprano saxophones; Loran Witteveen – piano; Stefan Lievestro – bass; Jimmi Hueting – drums

Recorded by Micha de Kanter at Wedgeview Studios, NL. June 13 and 14, 2017. Mixed by Micha de Kanter and Dick de Graaf, August 2017. Mastered at Q Point digital Audio by Peter Brussee. Photography and cover design by Shutterstock and Joost Leijen. Cover illustration Paul Klee (1922) “Twittering Machine”.

One of the most playful, challenging and cheerful releases of the past months. De Volkskrant – Gijsbert Kamer.

It really is jazz, but how it is done is very European, with fine odd measures in pieces such as 'Master slow feet' and 'Phenix'. There you hear the Eastern Europe of Bartók an ideal marriage with American swing. jazzflits.nl – Herman te Loo

It is wonderful to hear the singing tenor saxophone of De Graaf towering majestically above the other musicians in 'Why Birds Always Sing'. BIRD BUZZ is one of the highlights in the Dick’s extensive oeuvre. jazzenzo.nl – Cyriel Pluimakers.

Intense listening pleasure – jazznu.nl Rinus van der Heijden
