  A CD like this doesn’t come along too often. Dick’s quest to capture the soul of jazz has led him directly to the ROOTS (New Orleans). Carefully selecting songs, which cover practically the whole 20th century, along with a burning rhythm section, free from all extra-musical trappings. The result here is artistry of the highest order, standing on its own merit, naked, so to speak. The standards are played with imagination but respect to the tradition, I’ve had the pleasure of playing on the same bandstand with Dick on several occasions, and have always known him to be a completely honest swinging musician with a big hip SOUND. Marqué par de multiples influences dont celles d’un Joe Henderson première manière, Dick de Graaf – chaudement recommandé par un de ses petits camarades de pupitre et non des moindres: Bob Malach – joue comme il respire, avec naturel, sans effort, et swingue comme un fou. Après Roland Kirk et quelques autres, il vous revitalise avec lyrisme la <<Petite Fleur>> de Bechet, sur une mesure à 7/4 s’il vous plaît, à faire pâlir d’envie feu Don Ellis pourtant faire habitué à faire compliqué.   Beter dan op zijn andere platen wordt duidelijk hoe mooi de Graaf kan spelen, met op tenor een volle royale toon en op sopraansaxofoon een zuiver bijdetijds geluid. Opvallend is ook dat hij met deze gewone muziek de aandacht moeiteloos kan vasthouden, omdat het onder het oppervalk van straight-ahead jazz broeit en gist van de inspirerende ideeën en vondsten. Het ligt er alleen wat minder op, wat de CD eigenlijk wel zo spannend maakt. Het enige ongewone van deze in New Orleans opgenomen cd, die de soul en jazzgeschiedenis van New Orleans wil uitstralen , is dat het hoesje wordt gesierd met een foto van onze eigen havenstad Rotterdam.
